Today, many medications have side effects. Some side effects may be deadly or serious while others are just temporary and can be easily reversed. This is the reason why all the drugs and medication are tested and studied before they are release in the market. The Food and Drug Administration is in charge of the research and study of any drugs that manufacturers would like to sell in the market.

The FDA makes sure that the manufacturers have studied the drugs amply and that the drug does not have any adverse side effects for people, directly of indirectly. Some studies may take years before they pass the FDA standards.

What Is Prilosec?

Prilosec is a drug used to control and block the production of stomach acids. The generic name of this medication or drug is Omeprazole and it is used to treat duodenal and gastric ulcers along with some conditions that aggravate the production of stomach acids and other disorders in the digestive tract that is due to the overproduction of stomach acids.

Prilosec-Herbs Mix

Prilosec and herbs combination may have some side effects that contribute to the efficacy and effects of the drug. Since herbs have an effect on the body, it is a good idea to inform your medical practitioner of any herbal medicines or supplements that you might be taking. These may have an adverse reaction to the medication to be prescribed to you. Prilosec-Herbs combinations that can affect the drug are the herbs, kola and ma huang. These two herbal medicines can increase production of stomach acid therefore defeating the purpose of taking Prilosec.

Other Prilosec herbs mix that can have adverse effects are squill, black cohosh root and ginkgo are specifically contraindicated in Prilosec while Licorice has a commission E monograph for gastrointestinal ulcers. The Prilosec-Herbs combination is not a lot. Not too many herbs have a reaction with the drug which is a good thing because our food nowadays is being mixed with some natural or herbal medicines that may react to it.

Any herbal supplement that you might currently be taking must be informed to your medical practitioner to ensure that he knows what goes into your body. This Prilosec-Herbs example just goes to show that not all herbal supplements are appropriate for everyone. Although the Prilosec-Herbs reactions are minor, they can still affect our bodies. Prilosec and herbs are not lethal combinations but they hinder the healing process of the digestive tract.

Lewis Mehl-Madrona holds an M.D. from Stanford University and has been a practicing doctor for over 20 years. An experienced healer who has led many Native American healing ceremonies, Dr. Mehl-Madrona has also headed traditional medical clinics, helping AIDS and cancer patients as well as researching the benefits of relaxation techniques to aid in the natural correction of breech positioned babies.
